24 Points for Teachers: Classroom Resources and How to Use Them

Why the 24 game belongs in your classroom
The 24 game — given four numbers, combine them with + − × ÷ to make exactly 24 — is one of the most efficient fluency exercises that exists:
- All four operations in every problem. Students can't default to addition; division and subtraction are required to succeed.
- Order of operations becomes real. Parentheses are not a worksheet convention here — they're the tool that wins the game.
- Number sense over memorization. Students constantly decompose and recompose numbers: "Can I turn these four cards into a 3 and an 8?"
- Fraction intuition, gently. Only 16 of the 1,362 solvable hands actually require fraction intermediates, so the whole-number game is fully playable — and the occasional fraction hand lands as a genuine "wait, that's possible?" moment.
The game aligns with the spirit of grades 3–5 operations-fluency goals: it rewards flexible, accurate, and efficient computation rather than speed-drill recall. (We say "the spirit of" deliberately — this is a practice tool, not a mapped curriculum product.)
What the site gives you
- Printable worksheets with answer keys at /worksheets. Every sheet is generated from a deterministic seed — the same seed always produces the same sheet, down to the numbers. That means you can share a seed link with a colleague and both of you print the identical worksheet, or reprint a lost sheet weeks later.

Classroom usage patterns
- 5-minute warm-up. Project the daily puzzle or a worksheet's first row while students settle. One hand is exactly the right size for a soft start.
- Pair tournaments. Pairs race a set of hands against a timer; winners rotate. Difficulty tiers (easy 216 hands, medium 181) keep matches fair.
- Early-finisher work. Keep a printed sheet of expert hands at hand — only 16 exist in total, and hands like 3 3 8 8 reliably stall even strong students.
Grouping suggestion: pairs are the sweet spot — enough collaboration to argue about strategy, small enough that nobody coasts. For a calmer option, print one worksheet per table and let the group solve together; one student records, others propose.
